Large law enforcement presence at Whitesville Road hotel after shots fired during investigation

Muscogee County law enforcement are working an active scene Friday night near the Landings.

The scene is taking place at Baymont Inn and Suites on Whitesville Road.

Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirmed on scene that his special operations unit was notified of a wanted individual that had taken weapons from another law enforcement officer. The sheriff’s office tracked down the individual to the hotel. “When authorities were getting ready to approach the room, the wanted subject inside the room fired multiple rounds at investigators. Investigators returned fire,” Sheriff Countryman said. “We don’t know state of subject in the room and are waiting technology to get here to be able to look inside the room and better assess thing as well as find out if we need to enter right now.”

He added, “safety is the primary focus right now.” No investigators were injured. Georgia Bureau of Investigations is being called in to investigate due to it being a deputy involved shooting.

Columbus Fire and EMS is on the scene, as well as Columbus Police Department.
