FBI Blames North Korea for Record $6.3 Billion Binance Cryptocurrency Theft

The FBI has attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance to North Korean hackers operating under the name TraderTraitor.

In an October 31 alert, the agency said the theft occurred on or about October 29, 2026. The attack, reported to involve approximately $6.3 billion, has been described as the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.

The FBI said investigators working with the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation had observed the hackers converting stolen assets primarily into Ethereum. Authorities expect further laundering through decentralized finance platforms and instant-swap services.

The agencies urged cryptocurrency service providers to block transactions involving addresses linked to the stolen funds.

President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty about North Korea’s involvement when speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday.

“We don’t know if it’s North Korea, but if it is, we’ll talk to North Korea about it,” he said.
