Billings School Stabbing: No Felony Charges, City Attorney Reviews Montana Case

The Yellowstone County Attorney’s Office will not pursue felony charges following a nine-month investigation into a stabbing involving a teacher and a student at Billings Senior High School in Montana.

The January 13, 2026, incident remains under review by the Billings city attorney’s office. Police clarified that misdemeanor charges could still follow.

Superintendent Expresses Frustration

In an October 23 statement, Billings Public Schools Superintendent Erwin Garcia expressed frustration over the felony charging decision and described the incident’s impact on teachers and students.

Garcia said the district would complete its own investigation and seek access to criminal justice records.

The student has met graduation requirements and is no longer enrolled in the district. The teacher remains on paid administrative leave, according to the superintendent’s statement.
