Miguel Salguero-Olivares Convicted in Faith Hedgepeth Murder in North Carolina

A North Carolina jury found Miguel Salguero-Olivares guilty Friday of murdering University of North Carolina student Faith Hedgepeth, bringing a verdict 14 years after her death.

Jurors convicted him of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and a first-degree sexual offense.

Hedgepeth was found dead in her Chapel Hill apartment in 2012. Prosecutors argued that forensic evidence linked Salguero-Olivares to the killing, while defense lawyers challenged the investigation.

The jury began deliberations Thursday and resumed Friday after receiving requested DNA and fingerprint reports. Prosecutors presented nine days of evidence and called 23 witnesses.
