Ilhan Omar citizenship under federal scrutiny, relatives subpoenaed

Ilhan Omar’s citizenship and family immigration records are being examined by federal investigators, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper reported that authorities are scrutinizing how the Minnesota congresswoman obtained citizenship after arriving in the United States in 1995.

Investigators have issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including to some of her relatives—not dozens of family members, as some accounts have suggested. The Associated Press also reported that authorities seized her phone during Monday’s search of her Washington home.

Omar has denied committing immigration fraud, and her office describes the investigation as politically motivated. The investigation itself does not establish wrongdoing or change her citizenship status.
