YARA J tanker reportedly hit by drone near Sulina, Romania; crew safe

YARA J, a Comoros-flagged tanker, was reportedly struck by a drone near Sulina, Romania, on Wednesday evening, October 14, according to Romanian media.

Adevărul cited seafarers’ union leader and ITF Romania representative Adrian Mihălcioiu, who said the incident occurred in Romanian territorial waters.

Crew reported safe

Mihălcioiu said the crew was out of danger and apparently remained aboard, with the vessel’s engines operational.

Romania’s maritime rescue agency dispatched the rescue vessel SAR Apollo after receiving a request from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

The reported strike’s precise circumstances and responsibility have not been independently established. The claim that it was the first such attack inside any NATO member’s territorial waters remains unverified.
