Russia earthquake: Magnitude 5.2 aftershock strikes near Severo-Kuril’sk

Russia earthquake measuring magnitude 5.2 struck near Severo-Kuril’sk in the Kuril Islands early Sunday, according to preliminary seismic data.

The aftershock was centered about 101 kilometers south-southwest of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia, at a depth of approximately 83 kilometers.

The quake occurred at around 4:00 a.m. local time on October 12, 2026.

Aftershock near the Kuril Islands

The earthquake occurred in a highly active seismic region along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where strong earthquakes and aftershocks are common.

Because of its relatively deep depth, the shaking may have been less intense at the surface than a shallower earthquake of the same magnitude.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.

Additional aftershocks possible

Further aftershocks may occur as the region continues adjusting following earlier seismic activity.

Residents in the Kuril Islands and nearby coastal areas should continue monitoring official earthquake and emergency updates.

The Russia earthquake remains under observation as seismic agencies analyze additional data.
