Major evacuation in Bolton after police car crashes into shop, sparking gas leak fears

Residents have been evacuated from homes in Bolton after a police car crashed into a shop, raising fears of a possible gas leak.
The incident happened shortly before midday on Friday, October 2, on Blackburn Road near Asda in Astley Bridge.
Greater Manchester Police said the police vehicle was responding to a separate incident with its blue lights activated when it collided with another vehicle before crashing into the shop.
Emergency services were called to the scene and a cordon was established, with Blackburn Road closed in both directions.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said crews reported a strong smell of gas following the collision. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters, police, ambulance crews and gas engineers worked at the scene.
Police said no serious injuries have been reported.
Road closures remain in place while emergency teams investigate the suspected gas leak and make the area safe.
