Kalamazoo County prosecutor not charging Portage homeowner in deadly stabbing, but still might

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting is temporarily denying the charging petition from Portage Public Safety as officers requested a 54-year-old Portage homeowner be charged with open murder.
The man confronted 51-year-old Roy James Jr. of Kalamazoo for breaking into a vehicle in his driveway on Cedarcrest Avenue around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
James pulled a knife when the two were struggling with each other, and the homeowner stabbed him with it.
Portage Public Safety Director Matt Wolfe says officers were doing their part in the investigation and says they believed there “was probable cause that the homeowner had caused the death of the individual.”
