Fall forest fire season has arrived across North Carolina, running from October through December, and persistent drought conditions have state rangers preparing for an elevated risk of wildfires in the coming months.
Officials say debris burning — including yard waste like leaves and branches — remains the leading cause of wildfires statewide.
Craven County Ranger Daniel McCoy emphasized that simple precautions can significantly reduce the danger. “Don’t pick dry, windy days to do that burning,” McCoy said.
