Possible Tornado Briefly Develops Near Canyon, Texas as Residents Told to Stay Sheltered

A possible tornado briefly developed near West Rockwell Road south of Amarillo, Texas, Tuesday night as a powerful rotating thunderstorm moved through the Canyon area.

High-resolution Doppler radar at about 9:32 p.m. CDT showed a strong area of rotation near W Rockwell Road, indicating that a tornado may have been in progress briefly before the circulation weakened or lifted.

Residents were urged to remain in shelter, as the storm continued moving northeast and dangerous rotation could redevelop.

People in Canyon, Amarillo and nearby communities should stay in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and remain away from windows until the warning expires or authorities issue an all-clear.

There was no immediate official confirmation of damage or a tornado touchdown at the time of the radar observation.
