Video: Tornado Warning for Amarillo, Canyon and Mescalero Park, Texas, as Radar Shows Rotation

A tornado warning is in effect for the Amarillo and Canyon area of the Texas Panhandle, with a dangerous rotating thunderstorm moving northeast. The warning remains active until 10:15 p.m. CDT Tuesday.

The storm was reported about 5 miles northwest of Canyon, moving northeast at approximately 25 mph, with radar indicating rotation. Amarillo, Canyon and Mescalero Park are among the communities threatened.

The National Weather Service warns that flying debris could be dangerous to anyone without shelter. Mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, while damage to roofs, windows, vehicles and trees is possible. These are potential impacts from the storm, not confirmed damage reports. Earlier NWS warnings in the same area also cited radar-indicated rotation and urged residents to take immediate shelter. 

Residents in the warning area should take cover immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. Anyone in a mobile home or vehicle should move to substantial shelter if it can be reached safely.

Severe thunderstorms and torrential rainfall are also affecting portions of the Texas Panhandle, creating an additional risk of flash flooding.
