DMZ mine explosion: Seoul demands apology from Pyongyang as North Korea denies responsibility

South Korea has called on North Korea to apologize after a mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) injured three South Korean soldiers on September 21.

South Korea’s military said its preliminary findings indicate it is highly likely that North Korean mines caused the explosion. A North Korean-made resin antipersonnel mine was also reportedly discovered near the site during an inspection.

North Korea, however, denied responsibility on Wednesday, accusing Seoul of fabricating its conclusions.

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, also warned that Pyongyang would retaliate if North Korean soldiers were targeted along the border.

An investigation involving the South Korean military and the United Nations Command is continuing to determine the origin of the mines and the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
