NJ State Police Doubled Trooper Presence for 2026 World Cup at MetLife Stadium

New Jersey State Police deployed roughly twice the usual number of uniformed troopers at MetLife Stadium during 2026 FIFA World Cup matches compared with a typical football game, according to Deputy Superintendent Lt. Col. David Sierotowicz.

The agency highlighted the operation in its “Leadership Behind the Mission” feature, sharing Sierotowicz’s account of the planning and coordination behind public safety across the New York–New Jersey host region.

Sierotowicz served as the tournament’s public safety incident commander and detailed the operation in a September 24 article published by Police1.

Three Years of World Cup Security Planning

Preparations began in 2023, bringing together specialists in crowd management, intelligence, emergency medicine, transportation, cybersecurity and drone detection.

The operation extended beyond the stadium to hotels, training facilities and base camps used by 13 international teams. Officers also supported hundreds of fan events and conducted more than 1,000 escorts for teams, dignitaries and other VIPs, Sierotowicz wrote.

Security assignments continued around the clock until the final teams departed on July 20.

Agencies Coordinated From a Central Command Center

Command posts overseeing stadium crowds, transportation and other operations reported to an Area Command Center at the Regional Operations Intelligence Center in West Trenton.

That structure connected agencies throughout the tournament while troopers continued their regular statewide duties.

Security Investments Remain After the Tournament

The NYNJ Host Committee has separately outlined lasting improvements from the World Cup, including mobile camera systems, vehicle-screening equipment and enhanced drone-detection capabilities.

Regional emergency communications and coordination procedures developed for the tournament are also intended to support future major events and emergency responses.
