Father charged after 3-Week-Old infant found with multiple broken bones
A Madrid man is facing felony charges after his three-week-old infant was hospitalized with extensive injuries, including a broken arm, facial trauma, and 10 broken ribs, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
Arrest and charges
Investigators said the case began on Sept.
20, 2026, when Canton-Potsdam Hospital alerted the sheriff’s office after an infant was brought in with an arm fracture and hematomas in both eyes.
The infant was subsequently transferred to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, where medical personnel discovered an additional 10 broken ribs.
He was released under the supervision of probation, and a no-contact order of protection was issued on behalf of the child.
Charges and court proceedings
Shane Shortt was arrested Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, by the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
Authorities charged him with second-degree assault, a class D felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
Shortt, identified by authorities as the child’s father, was arraigned before Judge Chris Velez in Hermon Town Court.
