Around 100 people attend final TUSD community engagement session on school closures

Tucson Unified School District held its final community engagement session Saturday morning as it considers closing up to 10 schools.

The district said 317 people RSVP’d for the session, but 100 attended.

In small groups, participants signed in and reviewed a list of personal agreements meant to guide a productive and respectful conversation.

Participants then answered questions from the district, like what concerns they have around grade reconfiguration and how they decide where to enroll their child.

TUSD parents Amy and Luke Miller attended to advocate for their son’s school, Collier Elementary.

“I would really hate to see a high-quality school close down,” Amy Miller said.

“We have a five-year-old who’s currently going there — he’s in his second year there — and we absolutely love it — and we’re hoping that she’ll be able to go there,” said Miller, gesturing to her young daughter.

Other attendees raised concerns about combining grades. TUSD grandparent Anna Badilla said she is concerned about inappropriate relationships between students.
