Video: Nor’easter Moves North Off Delmarva as Coastal Flooding Hits Mid-Atlantic
A slow-moving nor’easter tracked north off the Delmarva coastline on Saturday, September 26, bringing strong winds, rain and coastal flooding to parts of the Mid-Atlantic.
The weather loop follows the storm’s movement throughout the day as communities along the Delaware coast and Jersey Shore dealt with flooding and rough seas.
Coastal flooding and dangerous surf
The National Weather Service warned of repeated rounds of significant tidal flooding through the weekend, with major flooding forecast along the New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coasts and portions of southern Delaware Bay.
High surf and dangerous rip currents added to the coastal hazards. Strong winds and prolonged wave action also threatened beach erosion.
The storm’s slow movement prolonged exposure to hazardous conditions, with successive high tides creating additional flooding concerns.
Emergency declared in eight New Jersey counties
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency effective Friday evening for Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem counties.
State officials warned that severe impacts could continue through Sunday, including damaging winds, heavy rain and significant coastal flooding.
Residents were urged to limit unnecessary travel, secure loose outdoor items and never drive through flooded roads.
