Hurricane Polo Regains Category 5 Strength as Baja California Sur Faces Possible Monday Landfall

Hurricane Polo has regained Category 5 strength over the eastern Pacific as forecasters track the powerful storm toward a possible landfall in Baja California Sur, Mexico, on Monday.

The hurricane was moving northwest Saturday with maximum sustained winds near 160 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Baja California Sur in Forecast Path

Polo is expected to move away from Mexico’s Pacific coast temporarily before curving back toward the Baja California Peninsula.

Forecasters said the storm could reach Baja California Sur as a hurricane early Monday, although changes in the track and intensity remain possible.

Dangerous Surf and Heavy Rain

Large waves generated by Polo are affecting portions of Mexico’s Pacific coast and could create life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Heavy rainfall associated with the hurricane also raises the risk of flash flooding and landslides in affected areas.

Cruise Itineraries Changed

Several cruise ships sailing from Los Angeles have already changed itineraries because of Hurricane Polo, canceling or replacing planned Mexican port calls.

Residents and travelers in Baja California Sur are being urged to closely monitor official hurricane forecasts as Polo approaches.
