Powerful Nor’easter Threatens Millions Across Northeast

Tens of millions of Americans are bracing for a powerful, slow-moving nor’easter bringing coastal flooding, beach erosion, strong winds and heavy rain to the Northeast through the weekend. Flooding and rough surf are already affecting coastal communities as the storm strengthens offshore.

New Jersey has declared a state of emergency effective at 5 p.m. Friday for eight counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem. The most severe impacts are expected from Friday night through Sunday.

In New York, officials have activated enhanced emergency monitoring, with coastal flood warnings covering Long Island, New York City and the lower Mid-Hudson region.

Wind gusts could reach 60 mph along parts of coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island, threatening fallen trees and power outages. Repeated high tides could worsen shoreline flooding and erosion throughout the storm.
