U.S. Secret Service personnel shot a man near the White House just after midnight on Sunday morning after he “brandished a firearm” and an “armed confrontation ensued.”
Secret Service officers ordered the man to drop his weapon but he refused to comply. After he pointed the gun towards them an officer shot him in the lower body.
They had been made aware by local police that this man was suicidal and travelling to D.C. from Indiana and appear to have first noticed his car parked near the White House before they spotted him on foot.
The confrontation happened near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW – less than a five-minute walk and about a block from the White House.
The suspect was quickly detained and taken to a hospital with unknown status as of this moment.
Authorities are now investigating the man’s motives and how he gained access to the restricted area.
No agents were harmed and the incident is now under investigation by D.C. police. It is unclear whether his motives were known or what they might have been.
President Trump was temporarily removed from the White House press briefing room after the incident.
