UK court ‘set on fire’ sparking evacuation as trials thrown into chaos

A Scottish court room was set ablaze this morning – throwing hearings into chaos.

The door of Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court could be seen with scorch marks after being set alight shortly before 5am. Police believe the incident was arson – meaning that the fire was deliberately set.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 4.50am on Thursday, police were made aware of a door on fire at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, Whytescauseway, Kirkcaldy. The fire is being treated as wilful and inquiries are ongoing.”

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue added: “We were called to Whytecauseway in Kirkcaldy to reports of a fire.

“Crews from Kirkcaldy and a height appliance from Dunfermline were mobilised to the scene. We received the stop message at 7.17am.”

No trials will be held at the court today due to the fire, with the main building entirely shuttered off.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service said: “The main building in Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court is closed today. All criminal business will call at Kirkcaldy Annex, those coming to court should attend there.
