Vermont State Police investigate fatal shooting in Waltham

Vermont State Police is investigating a Friday night shooting that fatally killed Michelle Kilbreth, 48, in Waltham, according to a press release.

The cause of death was gunshot wounds to the torso and the death has been ruled a homicide after an autopsy Saturday at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington, police said.

The investigation indicates the victim, a resident of McKnight Lane, got into a fight with another woman in the neighborhood,the release states.

Kilbreth, who had a handgun, lost possession of it during the fight, police said. A juvenile picked up the gun and fired it, striking the victim several times, police said in the release.

Police are not identifying the juvenile due to his age. No charges are filed yet and no further updates are available.
