San Antonio police have released body camera footage showing what transpired on a recent night when police shot a naked, screaming man who pointed a rifle at an officer outside a North Side home.

A woman called 911 about 7:30 p.m. on May 6 saying that a neighbor — later identified by police as Bryan Spangrud — pulled a rifle on her as she was picking up her mother in the 15600 block of Knollhollow.

The video footage may be viewed narrated by San Antonio police here.

As police approached Spangrud’s home, they heard him screaming obscenities in his backyard. While officers consulted with the mental health unit, police received a second 911 call saying that Spangrud was outside, naked and holding a rifle.

Spangrud did not respond to the officer’s commands to put down the rifle or come out of the residence and talk to police. Instead, he can be heard shouting obscenities, according to video footage.

Police said Spangrud walked in and out of his house repeatedly, sometimes with the rifle in hand.

At one point, an officer parked on the corner of the street in front of the home and used the patrol vehicle as cover. The officer later retreated from that position to join a perimeter formed with other officers.

Subsequently, Spangrud walked to that officer’s patrol vehicle, smashed a window and propped the rifle on the vehicle’s hood in a shooting position, aiming at officers, the body camera footage shows.

“Shotgun fired!” a supervisor on scene shouted as he fired a shotgun at Spangrud three times in slow succession, striking Spangrud once in the left arm, footage shows. Officers rendered first aid to Spangrud, including applying a tourniquet, and he was taken to a hospital.

Police later determined that Spangrud’s rifle was damaged and inoperable, police said.

Spangrud, 22, has been charged with two counts of deadly conduct and aggravated assault on a peace officer.
