Waukegan school counselor, coach shot to death

A counselor for the Waukegan school district and coach of the freshman volleyball team was shot and killed Saturday night, according to Waukegan police.

Police have not released the woman’s name. She was 23 years old, police said.

Her identity was to be formally released following the completion of an autopsy Monday, police said.

She was shot at 10:36 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 10th Street and Lewis Avenue, police said.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire found the woman in her vehicle. She was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan where she died from her wounds, police said. The woman was the sole occupant in the car, police said.

A second vehicle was also hit, but the driver was not injured.
