King Charles’s former butler reveals the one Christmas decoration the royals NEVER use on their trees and the Queen’s sweet holiday tradition for younger members of the family

King Charles’s former butler has unveiled the one Christmas decoration the royals never use on their trees at Christmas.

Grant Harrold worked for King Charles at his Highgrove residence in Gloucestershire between 2004 and 2011.

Talking to the Mirrorthe former royal butler opened up about the royal family’s Christmas traditions.

The insider said the royals try not to overdo it with decorations and will never use tinsel.

He said, “Everybody gets the tinsel, but if you go to a royal house, it’s much more green, baubles and lights, not tinsel.”

Earlier this week, Kensington Palace released a new photo of the Princess of Wales standing proudly in front of her tree in what appears to be the family’s London residence.

As Grant predicted, the stylishly decorated spruce has no tinsel.

Instead, the mother of three opted for velvet maroon bows, silver ornaments and a string of lights.

Meanwhile, the Queen Consort welcomed seriously ill children to Clarence House earlier this month to help her decorate her tree.

The children – who are supported by two of her patrons, Helen & Douglas House and Roald Dahl’s Marvelous Children’s Charity – chose from a selection of red and white decorations to hang from the branches, including mini stockings and cherubs.

While the Queen reportedly took a strict approach with her own Christmas trees, Grant said the late monarch had a sweet tradition for the younger members of the royal family.

He continued: ‘I heard that the Queen at Sandringham arranged for one of the trees in one of the rooms to be left bare for the children to decorate.

“It was a tradition that she started and the grandkids came and decorated them all a little bit, which I always thought was a nice idea.”

This year, the royal family will celebrate Christmas without the Queen for the first time, after she passed away in September at the age of 96.

The royals are still expected to attend a service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Sandringham Estate before heading home for their Christmas meal.

In November, it was reported that King Charles had invited Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to the family’s Christmas celebrations, despite their resignation from royal duties nearly three years ago.

But a source close to the king said: “It is unlikely they will attend.”

It will be Charles’ first time hosting the annual family gathering and Christmas holiday at the private estate in Norfolk.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will be there, staying at nearby Anmer Hall, the home they were given by the Queen.

Other family members are expected to join the King and Queen on their walk to church on Christmas morning.

The Royal Family has made Sandringham their base for Christmas and New Year since 1988.

Although the family traditionally spends the holidays at the estate, the routine has changed in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
