UPDATE: U.S. Diesel Price Hits Record $6.29 a Gallon as Gas Climbs Above $4.32

The average U.S. price of on-highway diesel has surged to a record $6.285 per gallon, according to the latest federal data, marking another sharp increase in fuel costs nationwide. 

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that diesel rose from $5.967 a gallon the previous week to $6.285 for the week of September 14.

Regular gasoline is also climbing. AAA’s latest national average was about $4.33 per gallon, up sharply as crude oil prices remain elevated and fuel markets face continuing supply pressure. 

Diesel prices have been pushed higher by tight inventories, refinery constraints and disruptions to global energy supplies. The increase is particularly significant because diesel is widely used by trucking, agriculture, construction and other industries, meaning higher costs can spread through the broader economy. 

For publication, I would use $6.29 diesel and $4.33 gas, rather than $6.30 and $4.36, because those are the latest figures I could verify.
