Hazmat called to overturned 18-wheeler on Hwy 90

An overturned 18-wheeler carrying sodium hydroxide shut down Highway 90 near Telegraph Road and 1-165 Tuesday as hazmat crews worked to contain the spill.

First responders were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. Mobile Fire-Rescue Capt. Steven Millhouse said crews initially responded to what appeared to be a diesel fuel spill.

Officials later learned the tanker was also carrying sodium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic soda or lye.

The chemical is highly corrosive and is used in products and processes including soap making, drain cleaners, paper production and pH control.
