More than 1,100 Wisconsin deer killed in state’s largest EHD outbreak

More than 1,100 deer have died in Wisconsin in an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says is the largest die-off of white-tailed deer from the disease in state history.

The outbreak began at the end of July and has affected at least five counties, according to the DNR.

Washington County has reported the highest number of cases, with more than 900. Cases have also been reported in Waukesha, Ozaukee, Milwaukee and Dodge counties.

EHD is spread to deer by midges, often known as “no-see-ums.” The DNR said there are more than 1,100 reported cases statewide, though the actual number may be higher because some deer deaths may go unreported.
