Flash Flooding Hits New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as Heavy Rain Triggers Rescues

Torrential rain triggered widespread flash flooding across parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on Sunday, flooding roads, disrupting train service and forcing emergency crews to rescue people from vehicles and homes.

Some areas saw rainfall rates of up to four inches per hour as powerful storms moved across the region.

In Westport, Connecticut, emergency crews carried out 13 vehicle rescues, while boats were used to evacuate residents from flooded homes in Bridgeport.

Authorities in Paterson, New Jersey, rescued about 20 people as rapidly rising water covered streets and trapped vehicles.

Rail travel was also disrupted, with Metro-North and Amtrak reporting delays and cancellations, while Tweed New Haven Airport temporarily closed its departure terminal because of flooding.

No deaths or serious injuries had been reported as conditions began improving, but officials continued urging residents to stay away from flooded roads and low-lying areas. (AP News)
