Waymo Car Pulls Itself Over in San Francisco After Detecting Juveniles With Gun, Police Say

A Waymo self-driving car pulled itself over in San Francisco after the company detected that two juvenile passengers may have had a firearm, leading to the arrest of a boy and girl, police said.

The incident happened shortly before 4 a.m. on September 3 in San Francisco’s Richmond District.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers were alerted to reports of passengers with a firearm inside an autonomous vehicle and carried out a high-risk vehicle stop.

Two juveniles detained

Police detained the two juvenile passengers after stopping the Waymo vehicle.

Authorities also said officers found suspected marijuana and mace spray inside the vehicle.

The two juveniles were arrested as police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the firearm and other items found inside the car.

Waymo’s system had detected the possible presence of a gun and alerted authorities, allowing police to respond to the vehicle.
