DFW Airport Ground Stop Extended as Thunderstorms Delay Flights in Texas
A ground stop at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was extended until 5:45 p.m. CDT on Thursday, September 10, as thunderstorms disrupted flights at the Texas airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA’s operations plan for 5 p.m. CDT said the restriction would likely be followed by a ground delay program, potentially prolonging disruption after the stop ends.
DFW Departure Delays Reach 90 Minutes
Separately, the FAA reported departure delays of 76 to 90 minutes and increasing at DFW in its 4:20 p.m. CDT update, citing thunderstorms. Those figures describe airport conditions at that reporting time, rather than the delay for every individual flight.
The ground stop began at 3:39 p.m. CDT. An advisory updated at 4:31 p.m. listed a medium probability of another extension, meaning the scheduled 5:45 p.m. end was not a guaranteed return to normal operations.
What the Ground Stop Means for Travelers
A ground stop holds affected flights bound for an airport at their departure points. It does not, by itself, mean every flight departing from DFW has been canceled or the entire airport has closed.
A subsequent ground delay program would assign departure times to affected DFW-bound flights, controlling how quickly aircraft arrive while airport capacity remains restricted.
