U.S. Targets Illicit Telegram Marketplace With More Than 650,000 Users

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has announced major federal action targeting an illicit Chinese-language marketplace operating through Telegram and reportedly serving more than 650,000 users.

Marketplace Allegedly Supported Online Investment Scams

Federal authorities said the platform allowed criminals to obtain tools and services used to create fraudulent investment websites designed to steal money from victims.

The marketplace was also allegedly used to launder stolen funds and support other criminal operations connected to large-scale online scams.

Links to Human Trafficking and Scam Compounds

Authorities said the platform helped recruit human trafficking victims to work inside scam compounds operating across Southeast Asia.

Many victims of these compounds are reportedly forced to carry out online investment and cryptocurrency scams under threats, violence and restrictive conditions.

Additional information about the federal action, including possible charges, seizures and the individuals targeted, is expected to be released.
