Hawaii’s First Recorded Tornado Watch Issued for Kauai as Hurricane Lowell Approaches

A Tornado Watch has been issued for Kauai County, Hawaii, as the outer rain bands of Hurricane Lowell move across the island, creating conditions capable of producing several tornadoes.

The watch remains in effect until 10 a.m. HST Tuesday and appears to be the first Tornado Watch issued for Hawaii in available official records.

Tornado Threat From Lowell’s Outer Bands

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were already affecting Kauai late Monday, with radar showing intense bands moving across and around the island.

A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible—not that one has been confirmed. Residents should remain alert, keep emergency notifications enabled and be prepared to move quickly to an interior room away from windows if a Tornado Warning is issued.

People should also avoid flooded roads as Lowell’s outer bands bring heavy rainfall and potentially dangerous conditions.
