A 35-year-old German amateur footballer has been arrested on suspicion of fatally poisoning his team-mate during an end-of-season trip, with prosecutors reportedly investigating whether the killing was an alleged act of revenge.
The player, named as Marius, was arrested on Tuesday, September 1, after investigators came to suspect he had secretly administered poison to Philipp, 30, during a team trip to Dresden.
Philipp became unwell during the trip involving players from amateur club TuS Rockenberg and grew seriously ill after returning home.
His family called emergency services and he was taken to hospital, where he died the following day, June 16, 2025, despite attempts to resuscitate him.
