Strong Thunderstorm Near Okeechobee Brings 50 MPH Winds and Flooding Risk

A strong thunderstorm near Okeechobee, Florida, was producing wind gusts of around 50 mph Saturday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Special Weather Statement for the area.

The storm was located just southeast of Okeechobee shortly before 7 p.m. EDT, with powerful winds capable of blowing down small branches and unsecured objects.

The weather statement covers Okeechobee County and portions of inland St. Lucie and Martin counties and remains in effect until 7:15 p.m. EDT.

Minor Flooding Possible as Heavy Rain Moves Through

Heavy rainfall accompanying the storm could also produce minor flooding, particularly in low-lying locations and areas with poor drainage.

Residents in and around Okeechobee are advised to remain alert as the storm moves through the region and to avoid driving across flooded roads.
