Death Toll Rises to 30 in Conakry Landfill Landslide, Guinea

CONAKRY, Guinea — The provisional death toll from a massive landslide at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in Guinea’s capital has risen to 30, according to updated figures from the country’s Civil Protection authorities.

The new toll was announced Sunday afternoon as rescue teams continued searching through tons of debris for people who may still be trapped.

Landfill Collapsed Onto Homes

The disaster struck overnight from Saturday into Sunday in the Dar-es-Salam area of Gbessia after heavy rainfall hit Conakry.

A large section of the garbage dump collapsed onto homes located around the site, burying residents beneath debris.

Earlier authorities had reported lower casualty figures before additional victims were recovered during search and rescue operations.
