Indonesia Flores Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 68 as Rescuers Search Rubble

The death toll from the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Indonesia’s Flores region has risen from 54 to at least 68, authorities announced Monday.

More than 200 people were injured, while thousands were evacuated as rescue teams continued searching damaged buildings and isolated communities across East Nusa Tenggara province.

Rescue Operations Continue

Emergency crews are searching collapsed structures and preparing helicopter missions to reach areas cut off by landslides and damaged roads.

Authorities are also deploying aircraft carrying food, tents, medical supplies and other emergency aid. Field hospitals are being established to treat people suffering from head injuries, broken bones and other trauma.

Some survivors reported shortages of clean water, food and medicine while waiting for assistance in temporary shelters.

Nearly 1,600 Aftershocks Recorded

Officials said nearly 1,600 aftershocks had been recorded by Monday. A magnitude 5.6 earthquake also struck the region Monday morning, increasing fears among residents already sleeping outdoors.

Many families are refusing to return to damaged homes because of the continuing aftershocks and possible structural collapses.

Homes and Roads Damaged

Around 500 homes were reported damaged, while landslides blocked roads in several affected areas, including Sikka and Manggarai.

Rescue teams continue assessing remote communities as authorities work to restore transportation links and deliver supplies to survivors.
