M5.7 Earthquake Strikes Japan’s Volcano Islands Region

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the Volcano Islands region of Japan on Saturday, August 15, according to preliminary seismic data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The earthquake occurred at approximately 19:32 UTC in the Volcano Islands, Japan region, with preliminary EMSC data placing the earthquake at a depth of about 46 kilometers.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the same earthquake at magnitude 5.5 and a depth of approximately 40 kilometers, indicating slight differences between the preliminary measurements from the two seismic agencies.

Magnitude may be revised

Earthquake magnitude and depth estimates frequently change during the first minutes after an event as additional seismic stations provide data.

The M5.7 measurement remains preliminary and could therefore be revised.

Damage reports monitored

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties following the earthquake.

Seismic agencies continue to monitor the Volcano Islands region for additional activity and possible aftershocks.
