Steny Hoyer to Retire After Decades in the U.S. House

Steny Hoyer retirement plans were confirmed as the longtime Democratic lawmaker from Maryland said he intends to retire in early 2027, ending one of the longest congressional careers in modern U.S. history.
Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th Congressional District since 1981 and is currently the longest-serving Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the decades, he held key leadership roles including House Majority Leader and Minority Whip, playing a central role in major legislative efforts.
Hoyer said his decision reflects a desire to step aside while still able to serve effectively, allowing a new generation of leaders to emerge. His retirement is expected to trigger a competitive race for his Maryland seat and mark a significant shift in Democratic leadership dynamics.
