Flash flood warning in place for more than a million people in New Jersey including Newark, Elizabeth and East Orange until 7:30 pm ET

Flash flood warning has been issued for parts of New Jersey, affecting over a million people, including residents in Newark, Elizabeth, and East Orange. The warning will remain in effect until 7:30 PM ET today.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), intense rainfall is moving across the region, creating conditions ripe for flash flooding in low-lying areas, streets, underpasses, and near rivers or streams.
“This is a dangerous situation. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters,” the NWS warned in an urgent alert. “Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
Emergency responders are on high alert, and local authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Meteorologists say the storm system may dump 1 to 3 inches of rain in a short time, overwhelming drainage systems and potentially leading to road closures.
Residents are advised to:
- Monitor weather alerts through local news or weather apps
- Avoid flooded roads and underpasses
- Prepare emergency kits and stay in contact with neighbors, especially the elderly or those in need
Further updates will be provided as conditions develop.
