Mexico: Massive Gas Explosion Destroys Home in Playa del Carmen, One Critically Injured

A powerful gas explosion rocked a home in Playa del Carmen’s Bosque Real neighborhood on Wednesday, destroying the property and leaving one man in critical condition.

The explosion occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Montes los Pinos Street, when neighbors reported hearing a loud blast from one of the attached homes. Firefighters and emergency responders from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene.

Officials say the explosion was caused by an accumulation of LP gas in the kitchen. According to reports, a man inside the home turned on the stove, unaware of the gas buildup. The moment he ignited it, the gas burst into flames, causing a massive explosion that blew out windows and metal security bars.

The man suffered second- and third-degree burns across most of his body and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Two minors inside the home sustained minor injuries and are reported to be out of danger.

“The fire was brought under control by firefighters, who prevented it from spreading to nearby homes,” Civil Protection said in a statement.

This marks the second serious gas explosion in Playa del Carmen in less than a week. A similar incident last week in a rented room on 80th Street in the Luis Donaldo Colosio neighborhood left one man dead after he succumbed to severe burns covering 70% of his body.

Authorities continue to urge residents to regularly check gas lines and appliances to prevent such tragedies.
