Monday update (11:30 a.m.) The Wichita Police Department has identified the suspect in a deadly shooting at Onyx nightclub as 33-year-old Terrance J. Johnson.

Police said the shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday in the parking lot of the nightclub, located near Kellogg and Webb. Jaylon Pete, 23, was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Two other men, ages 24 and 26, suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

Investigators learned there was a disturbance inside the nightclub, and Johnson was thrown out. Police said he went out and got a weapon. He tried to reenter the club but was denied. Police are still trying to determine the events that led up to the shooting in the parking lot.

“He is thrown out – tries to reenter through the same door. He’s banging on the doors – they don’t allow it to happen – then interacts with the victim then decides to shoot the victim and begins to shoot in a reckless manner and two other people are hit,” said Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan.

He said the club is cooperating with police on the investigation.

“I have no doubt that the actions they took to wand everyone entering the club, making sure once people were ejected they could not reenter the club, I have no doubt that prevented a more serious incident than did occur,” he said.

About 30 minutes after the shooting, officers were called to a domestic violence call in the 1700 block of N. Pinecrest. They arrested Johnson for misdemeanor criminal damage to property. At the time, officers didn’t know he was the shooting suspect. He was booked into jail and later released.

It wasn’t until Sunday at noon that Johnson was identified as the shooter from Onyx.
