Two men critically wounded in drive-by shooting as mourners leave Chicago funeral home

CHICAGO – Two people were shot and critically wounded outside a funeral home Thursday morning on Chicago’s South Side.

Around 11 a.m., officials say the male victims were standing near the sidewalk outside Leak and Sons Funeral Home at 7838 S. Cottage Grove Avenue in Chatham when a vehicle drove by and an occupant inside pulled out a gun and fired shots.

A 38-year-old man was struck in the face, head and neck, and transported to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition, police said.

A 43-year-old man was shot in the jaw and took himself to the same hospital in critical condition.

Chicago police were requested in advance to maintain a presence outside the funeral home because it was a service for a crime victim — Jhacarion Johnson, who was shot and killed on Aug. 3 in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Even still, authorities say a gunman brazenly shot at mourners with an extended clip attached to his weapon, making it automatic.

“A police car was right out front when all this happened and police witnessed it. They took off chasing after the guys,” said Spencer Leak Jr., of Leak & Sons Funeral Home
