Virginia Medicaid ends youth gender-related treatment coverage October 13
Virginia Medicaid will stop covering specified gender dysphoria treatments for members under 18 beginning October 13, 2026, according to a Department of Medical Assistance Services bulletin.
The change also applies to Children’s Health Insurance Program members under 19. DMAS said it is implementing a new federal rule restricting funding for these services.
Transition period for existing medication treatment
The bulletin says federal funding will remain available for a medication tapering period of up to six months for eligible young people receiving gender-affirming medications as of October 13.
The federal restrictions cover gender-affirming hormone treatments and surgeries for the affected age groups.
The coverage notice does not announce criminal charges or establish that providers committed a crime.
