Pentagon data breach exposes personal information of over 3 million people

Pentagon data breach exposed sensitive personal information belonging to more than 3 million people with U.S. military ties, according to a Pentagon official cited by Federal News Network.
The breach affected a Defense Manpower Data Center information system. Unauthorized users accessed records between October 2025 and July 2026. The incident was publicly reported in September.
Social Security numbers and birth dates exposed
The compromised files contained unencrypted personal information, including Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth and military personnel information.
The affected population extends beyond serving troops and veterans to people in other military-associated categories.
Free credit monitoring offered
Affected individuals are being offered 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity-restoration services through IDX, according to breach notifications.
Defense officials said they had found no evidence, at the time of the reporting, that the exposed information had been misused.
