CHCCS changes course, votes to dissolve Glenwood Elementary School’s Mandarin magnet program

Glenwood, which the board voted to close after the 2026-27 school year due to declining enrollment, houses the Mandarin-English Dual Language program and the Mandarin World Language program.

Official response and confirmed impact

The Dual Language program is a magnet program where kids get half their instruction in Mandarin and half in English.

The World Language program is also a magnet program and features Mandarin as an elective.

This is similar to other elementary schools that offer French or Spanish classes, Andy Jenks, chief communications officer for CHCCS, said.

Current fourth graders in the Mandarin language program will be able to continue to their final year on the pathway at Rashkis Elementary.

Siblings of students in the program will be given the option to attend Rashkis, but they will not receive Mandarin instruction and will take Spanish as a World Language elective.

The board also identified Mary Scroggs Elementary School as a placeholder location for the World Language program but decided last Thursday that it will no longer be held as a place holder because it will not be receiving any additional programs or students as a result of this decision.

Incident background

At a previous Board of Education meeting on Aug. 20, board members had voted 5-2 to relocate the Mandarin Dual Language program to Rashkis Elementary.
