Wilmington International Airport awarded $3 million FAA grant for apron expansion

WILMINGTON, New Hanover County — Wilmington International Airport is receiving $3 million in federal funding to expand its apron, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The funding comes through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.

Federal transportation officials said the latest grants are intended to strengthen and modernize airport facilities, improve airfield infrastructure and support safe and efficient airport operations.

Wilmington International Airport's $3 million award will specifically go toward expanding the apron, the area of an airport where aircraft can park and be serviced.

"Across the country, we are making long overdue investments into airport infrastructure that will enhance the travel experience for American families," U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P.

Duffy said.

Incident under investigation

"Through runway, terminal, and facility updates, we are making sure our overall systems are more reliable and resilient." FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the grants will help airports move forward with infrastructure projects.

The Wilmington grant is part of $84.4 million announced for airport projects in North Carolina, Texas and Wyoming.
