Patient Zero Traced in Deadly Hantavirus Cruise Ship Outbreak

Dutch birdwatcher and ornithologist Leo Schilperoord has been identified as the suspected “patient zero” in the hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius, according to international reports. Investigators believe he contracted the rare Andes strain of the virus after visiting a remote landfill site near Ushuaia, Argentina — an area known for rodent activity and popular with birdwatchers seeking rare Patagonian species.

Schilperoord and his wife, Mirjam, had been traveling across South America for five months before boarding the expedition cruise on April 1 with more than 100 passengers. Days into the voyage, he developed fever, headaches, stomach pain, and diarrhea before dying onboard on April 11.

His wife later became ill while transporting his body through South Africa and died in hospital after being denied boarding on a flight to the Netherlands. A third passenger from Germany has also reportedly died.

The World Health Organization said the outbreak linked to the ship has reached at least six confirmed cases, including several British nationals, prompting international monitoring and quarantine measures. Authorities suspect infected rodents at the Argentine landfill were the original source of exposure.
