Urbana police respond to shooting near school

Urbana officers responded to multiple calls reporting a potential robbery of a resident in the vicinity of 1200 S. Vine Street.

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, at approximately 1:43 PM, officers discovered a 21-year-old man from Champaign who had sustained a gunshot wound to the side.

The injured individual was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates the injured individual was directly involved in an incident, which occurred immediately prior, at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of South Vine Street.

Officers learned that following the initial altercation, the wounded person fled towards Urbana Middle School and High School (UHS/UMS), with another party discharging a firearm in pursuit.

The incident was not a random act of violence, and there is no discernible indication of a broader threat to the general public or UHS/UMS staff or students.

School officials are cooperating fully with law enforcement to secure video footage relevant to the investigation.

The Urbana Police Department assures the community that every effort is being made to comprehensively examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
