An Afghan refugee has revealed how last week he almost boarded a dinghy that sank in the English Channel, killing four migrants.

At a camp near Dunkirk, a 27-year-old Afghan said Kurdish smugglers prevented him from boarding the ship that capsized in the Channel during the week because it was so overcrowded.

The man, who claims to have been an army medic in his home country, said he and dozens of others walked for 10 hours to get to a remote beach to make the crossing.

“I’m lucky I wasn’t on the boat. But I’ll try again,’ he said. “I can’t go back to Afghanistan because of the Taliban, I’ll try to work as a doctor in England.”

Yesterday, during the first weather break since Wednesday’s tragedy, hundreds of migrants crossed the Channel.

The first arrived in Dover at 3.15 am in the Border Force boat Defender which had picked up about 60 migrants.

Two other lifeboats with about 45 and 50 migrants arrived before 7am.

Up to ten fully loaded boats are thought to have arrived.

On one boat, the migrants had not even been given a life jacket.
